Creating Just Homes for people & planet

Our Mission

Our mission is to resource unhoused people of color in California with high-quality, permanent, and climate-resilient housing so they can rest, heal, and pursue lives of joy and well-being.

Our Vision

We envision a future economy where all Californians live in green, comfortable, and joyful homes that are deeply and permanently affordable.

The Challenge

More than 172,000 people are living unhoused in California today.  Like every person, our unhoused neighbors need and deserve healthy, high-quality homes that shelter them from increasingly dangerous climate events; are close to the people they love; and allow them to maintain a sense of belonging and place.

Unfortunately, we live in an Extractive Economy where housing is treated as a commodity, an investment, and a political tool, rather than a human right. In this economy, those with power use ideas such as white supremacy to rationalize hoarding wealth at the expense of everyone else. Over generations, racist economic policies and practices have effectively marginalized people of color, making them more economically vulnerable and at risk of losing their homes.

As a result, a disproportionate number of our 172,000 unhoused neighbors are people of color, specifically Black and Indigenous People.

Our Solution

  • 1. Transform Housing.

Convert vacant apartment complexes into beautiful, green, healthy homes that are an asset to residents and the larger community.

  • 2. House People.

Resource unhoused people of color with permanent, high-quality, climate resilient homes provide services that residents identify they need to rest, heal, and achieve well-being.

  • 3. Build Community Power.

Transfer ownership of the properties to residents, and support them in building the capacities to cooperatively own, manage, and self-govern their housing communities and otherwise build economic and political power.

Just Homes in Oakland

Our first projects will serve our neighbors in the Oakland community where we live. When all people of color in Oakland are permanently housed, we will joyfully turn our attention to other geographies in California.

How We Work

Through our work, we uplift and live the values that we see as central to Regenerative Economy: justice, inter-being, deep democracy, and joy.
